Have you ever seen a child get something stuck in their throat? If you haven't, you should know that this can send just about any well composed parent on a frenzied trip to the emergency room.
Well, thanks to the quality attention paid to human factors by the folks over at Lego, this scenario is less common than it could otherwise be.
According to a Q&A session between Lego and Gizmodo, "We added this hole on the top of the head just in case any kids got one of the heads stuck on their throat. That way they would be able to keep breathing."
Lego designs products that are both fun and educational, and through serious study into the possible things children could do with their Legos, have found a simple way to make them safer to play with as well.
It's important to remember that tools, just like toys, may be used, whether on purpose or by accident, in a manner not intended by their designer. Because of this fact, we must consider all the potential ways a tool could be used and then develop a plan to mitigate any risks that this may pose.
